Kerr Lake (Buggs Island Lake)

The Army Corps of Engineers operates this 50,000 acre reservoir and an additional 50,000 acres of surrounding land. In the 1950's, Kerr Reservoir, also called Buggs Island Lake, was constructed primarily to provide for flood control and hydropower generation.


The 900 miles of wooded shoreline stretch across three counties in Virginia and three in North Carolina. Brunswick County

The first English settlers in Brunswick county swarmed into the lands near Fort Christanna during its 4 years of operation (1714 - 1718). Brunswick County was established in 1720. Brunswick stretched all the way to the Blue Ridge until 1745, when a series of new counties was formed and the current western border established.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18,419 people, 6,277 households, and 4,312 families residing in the county. The median age was 38 years.

Charlotte County

Charlotte County is located in the south-central area of Virginia. and was formed from neighboring Lunenburg County in 1764 and named for Queen Charlotte, wife of George III of England. Settlement of this new frontier began approximately 50 years before the county was formed. It has total area of 478 square miles.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12,472 people, 4,951 households, and 3,435 families residing in the county. The median age was 40 years.

The village of Charlotte Court House has been listed with the state and National Registers of Historic Places as an Historic Courthouse District for its uniqueness in architecture, business and government buildings.

Lunenburg County

Lunenburg County is located in the south-central area of Virginia. The county's two major towns of Victoria and Kenbridge are 65 miles from Richmond. It is nicknamed "The Old Free State" because during the build up of the Civil War, it let Virginia know the county would break off if the state did not join The Confederacy.

As of the census of 2010, there were 12,914 people, 4,998 households, and 3,383 families residing in the county. 

The median age was 40 years.

Mecklenburg County

Mecklenburg County is situated along Virginia's Southern border with North Carolina. Located on I-85, Mecklenburg County is situated half way between Richmond and Raleigh-Durham. It was named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III. As of the census of 2010, there were 32,727 people, 12,951 households, and 8,962 families residing in the county. 

The median age was 41 years.

Mecklenburg County boasts a strong quality of life, with its rich history and outdoor recreation featuring three lakes. History buffs will find Prestwould, a beautiful plantation home in Clarksville, the 18th century Boyd Tavern in Boydton, MacCallum More Gardens and Museum in Chase City, the best Tobacco Heritage Museum in the state located in South Hill, and several local history museums throughout the County.

Nottoway County

Nottoway County was first inhabited by the Iroquoian nation tribe called Nadowa. The Nadowa lived along the County’s only river and the name of their tribe became associated with the area they inhabited. This name was Anglicized with the coming of English settlers to ‘Nottoway.’ The county is home to the towns of Crewe, Burkville and Blackstone along with nearby Fort Pickett, established at the outbreak of World War II.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15,725 people, 5,664 households, and 3,885 families residing in the county. 

The median age was 39 years.

Nottoway boats "a pleasant balance of open space and friendly towns and a wealth of natural resources."
